A diocesan bishop (or archbishop) is, by divine institution (c. 375 § 1), the chief shepherd of the diocese to which he is assigned (c. 381). He is appointed exclusively by the pope (c. 377). Diocesan bishops are assisted in some cases by auxiliary bishops (c. 403). Auxiliaries designated as “coadjutors” will automatically succeed the diocesan bishop upon his death or resignation (c. 404). Canon law expresses a preference that bishops have, among other things, advanced academic degrees in various ecclesiastical disciplines (c. 378 § 1, 5°). All bishops are asked to submit their resignations at age 75, although it is up to the Holy See to decide whether these resignations will be accepted (cc. 401, 411).

In the following tables, names preceded by “Bp.” describe a diocesan bishop and by “Abp.” an archbishop. Names in bold are cardinal archbishops, while names in italics are members of institutes of consecrated life (c. 705). Seminary degrees (typically, the M. Div.) are assumed, but other academic degrees are listed when known. Note that many bishops served as auxiliaries or even diocesan bishops in other sees before being assigned to and installed in their current arch/diocese. The designation “CoAd” refers to coadjutors, and indicates that a given bishop will succeed to the see in question, although the precise date might not have been established yet. An asterisk (*) indicates that a coadjutor has been named to follow that bishop. Occasionally, a bishop named for an arch/diocese is listed below as being there, even though his installation might yet be a few weeks off (see, e.g., c. 379). Similarly, some bishops' cessation from office as announced is recorded here though they have not yet canonically left their sees.

These tables cover only Roman Rite bishops. By their very nature, these tables are a work-in-progress. Those noting inaccuracies in these charts are invited to email the webmaster (as several have kindly done!)
