Booknote: Msgr. Peter Elliot, Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year (Ignatius Press, 2002). Monsignor Elliot is one of the most insightful and reliable liturgists writing today. The rubrics of the Roman Rite are not self-explaining, but with Elliot's work safely in reach, a generation of liturgists raised without a rich training in tradition can confidently approach the Ritual and be more respectful of the faithful's fundamental right to sound worship.

+ A thought on liturgical abuse
The earliest Christian writing we have is St. Paul's Letter to the Corinthians. Take a look at 1 Cor. 11: 17-29, where we find the oldest account of the Last Supper. Notice: St. Paul's Eucharistic narration is immediately preceded, and followed, by the Apostle's ringing criticism of something. What? Liturgical abuse! Hardly a generation after Our Lord's own time, and the Church is already having to correct liturgical abuse. Serious stuff, too, like getting drunk at Mass. Of course, this observation does not make today's liturgical abuse less painful; how could it, for by its nature, liturgical abuse arises in our very midst, at our own hands, even. But it does, perhaps, contextualize the problem for us a bit. Liturgical abuse, it seems, has always been with us, and likely always will. enp.

Liturgical renewal as a movement of the Holy Spirit
1. "The liturgical movement is thus shown forth as a sign of the providential dispositions of God for the present time, of the movement of the Holy Ghost in the Church..." Pope Pius XII, Allocution to the International Congress on the Liturgy (1956).
2. "Zeal for the promotion and renewal of the sacred liturgy is rightly held to be a sign of the providential dispositions of God in our time and as a movement of the Holy Spirit in his Church." II Vatican Council, const. Sacrosanctum Concilium 43, (1964)
3. "We should give thanks to God for that movement of the Holy Spirit in the Church which the liturgical renewal represents." Pope John Paul II, ap. let. Vicesimus quintus annus 12 (1988).

2. Directed Readings (listed in order of original publication)
Olivier
Rousseau, The Progress of
the Liturgy: An Historical Sketch from the Beginning of the 19th
Century to the Pontificate of Pius X (1951, ISBN: na., pp.
219). Good overview by a careful observer. Translation of the
original French version, Histoire du movement liturgique
(1945, ISBN: na, 245 pp).
Paul Marx, Virgil
Michel and the Liturgical Movement (1957, ISBN: na., pp.
466). Well-done biography of America’s most influential
liturgical reformer. (Yes, the author did become the famous
pro-life activist.)
L. Sheppard, ed., The
People Worship: A History of the Liturgical Movement (1967,
ISBN: na, pp. 264). Reliable through and through. Translation of
the original French version Le Renouveau liturgique (1960).
aa.vv., (Sacerdotal Communities…), The
Liturgical Movement (1964, ISBN: na, pp. 139). Good
overview by various French priests.
Bernard Botte, From Silence to Participation:
An Insider's View of Liturgical Renewal (1988, ISBN: 0-912405-54-6, pp. 187). Mostly
anecdotal, but informative and even entertaining. Translation of
the original French version Le mouvement liturgique: Témoignage
et souveniers (1973). By one of the last of the Benedictine
liturgical legends (Dom Botte died in 1980).
Thomas Richstatter, Liturgical Law Today: New Style,
New Spirit, (1977, ISBN: 0-8199-0672-7, pp.
234). Despite the title, this is mostly a historical review,
generally sound, well written, very informative.
Annibale Bugnini, The Reform of the Liturgy (1948-1975), (1990, ISBN: 0-8146-1571-6,
pp. 974). Only the popes wielded more authority over the concrete
reorganization of the liturgy than did Abp. Bugnini, and his
encyclopedic account of the reform, albeit with some expressions
of his own bias, is unsurpassed.
Noel
Barrett, Martin B Hellriegel: Pastoral Liturgist
(1990, ISBN: na., pp. 209).
Biography of the American pastor who, more than any other, made
the conciliar reform of the liturgy come alive in a working class
parish. I was there, I saw it.
R.
Tuzik, ed., How Firm a
Foundation: Leaders of the Liturgical Movement (1990, ISBN:
na., pp. 346). Relatively brief overviews of some 40 liturgical
reformers. Generally useful, but of very uneven quality, with some
serious (but frankly acknowledged) omissions.
J. D. Crichton, Lights in the Darkness: Forerunners of the Liturgical Movement, (1996, ISBN: 1-85607-152-9, pp. 176). Valuable accounts of liturgical reformers going back to the 17th century.
Most Rev. Attila Miklósházy, S.J., Benedicamus Domino! The Theological Foundations of the Liturgical Renewal (2001). REVIEW 5 April 2006: A note on Bp. Mikloshazy's retirement.
3. Reference Tables in Liturgy
Encountering the Psalms in the Liturgy: Major Hours of the Office, Book of Blessings
Compiled by Dr. Edward Peters Updated September 2004
“In the psalms, the Church hears the voice of Christ crying out to his Father.”— St. Augustine
The Hours designated here always begin with the four-week psalter where applicable (Roman numerals designate weeks thereof), and then move on to various commons.
Psalms used in the Book of Blessings, designated X, usually appear as responses to a proclamation of the Word. In most cases, one psalm is printed in the text itself, while others are referenced as alternatives (alt). Only those blessing occurring outside of Mass (which would of course have psalms in response to different Scripture readings) are listed here.
In all cases, one would have to check the liturgy itself to determine whether all, or more likely just some, of an indicated psalm was being used therein.
Over time, psalms from other liturgies will be added to this list. Suggestions or corrections sent to the webmaster would, as always, be most appreciated.
