Using this page
|
This page is designed to be as intuitive as possible but users might desire a more detailed explanation of its arrangement. Users of this apparatus should be familiar with the Master Page on Western Canon Law, here, and the Codex Vigens - Introduction, here.
Given the centrality of the canon to canon law, this page is fundamentally oriented to canon numbers. Each canonical entry on this page consists of two main parts: a Provision and its Information Box.
1. Provision (basically, the Canon).
Each provision, i.e., canon, is indicated in green highlight and preceded by 'CIC' (Codex Iuris Canonici) if the provision is original or by a document name if the provision has been modified by said document. Canon numbers are always presented in a four-digit format ending with a semi-colon (making each entry unique thus permitting quick location).
All canons are next linked to their current official Latin text (Latine) and to the Vatican's English translation (English); note that both of these documents have been reorganized for use on this site. Finally, each entry offers a brief English summary of the topic(s) treated in the canon.
Where a canon has been modified since its promulgation, the original provision, immediately below the current version of the law, is preceded by "― Olim" (formerly) and presented in pale yellow, again in a four-digit format beginning with "Sacrae" (for Sacrae disciplinae leges) and ending with a semi-colon. It, too, is linked to the provision's original Latin text, the Vatican's English translation thereof, and is summarized in English.
2. Information Box.
Every provision has a grey-shaded Information box consisting of four parts:
Some provisions have a final fifth part, as follows:
Source(s). Drawing chiefly on the official footnotes of the Johanno-Pauline Code, 'Source(s)' lists canon(s) of the Pio-Benedictine Code of Canon Law a/or passage(s) from the documents of the Second Vatican Council on which the Legislator drew when formulating the provision in question. Links therein for Pio-Benedictine canon numbers are to the treatment of that canon on the Codex Quondam page (here) while those for conciliar documents take one to the relevant document as posted on the Vatican website. Some of the citations listed in 'Source(s)' have been modified or even corrected from those found in various correlating tables as warranted. If no codical or conciliar source for a given canon or a subdivision thereof was identified (regardless of whether other sources for a provision might have been asserted by the official footnotes) the 'Source(s)' space is marked as empty (≠).
Parallel(s). Drawing on various unofficial correlations, 'Parallel(s)' list canons of the Eastern Code of Canon Law that treat (however differently) the same matters treated in the Western provision in question. Links therein for Eastern Code canon numbers are to that canon on the Codex Vigens - Eastern Code page (here). Some of the citations in 'Parallel(s)' have been modified or even corrected from those found in various correlating tables as warranted. If no parallel provision for a given canon or subdivision thereof has been identified the 'Parallel(s)' space is marked as empty (≠).
Official. A link to possible papal, dicasterial, a/o particular actions regarding various canons is given in the 'Official' section of the Information box. More complete information about what is contained concerning official materials in the Supplement(s) page is available on that page.
Scholarly. Canons or blocks of canons for which supplementary materials (usually academic in nature) have been found are linked to those materials on Supplements page (here). Supplementary information has not been found for all provisions, of course, and such absences are marked empty (≠), as above. More complete information about what is contained concerning scholarly materials in the Supplement(s) page is available on that page.
Note(s). Occasional pieces of information, such as cross-references to a given provision of the Code within the Code itself, are presented in the 'Note(s)' section. A very few comments, in italics, also appear in Note(s). Provisions without such materials contain no 'Note(s)'.
▲ Special topic: Always set off by '▲' and highlighted in gray, these entries are self-explanatory.

Western Code of Canon Law. cc. 1-1752.
The fundamental unit of canonical legislation is the "canon" (Greek, κανών, a rule or measure). All canons are of equal juridic weight. Canons are sequentially numbered and organized into seven "Books", also of equal juridic weight, four of which books (I, II, VI, and VII) are direct successors of Pio-Benedictine organization while the other three (III, IV, and V) are derived from the unwieldy Book III of the 1917 Code. Within books, most canons are grouped into larger thematic sets a/o divided into smaller specific provisions but such groupings a/o subdivisions carry no legislative import. The structure of the Johanno-Pauline Code can be charted as follows with categories in parentheses appearing in the various areas of the Code, or not, as the case may be:
Book / (Part) / (Section) / (Title) / (Chapter) / (Article) / Canon / (Section or Paragraph) / (Number) / (Letter)

▲ Special topic: Post-promulgation textual modifications of the Western Code.
Because the numbering conventions followed by the Holy See in these modifying documents can cause confusion for researchers it is disregarded here in favor of (a) citing to the papal document by which the original version of a given provision was replaced, along with the new canon number, and (b) referring to the original provision by the appellation "Sacrae" (for 'Sacrae disciplinae leges', the apostolic constitution in which they were originally promulgated). Canons not modified by subsequent legislation are simply cited by the well-known abbreviation "CIC". Note that "CIC" and "Sacrae" and would refer to the identical provision.
The papal documents by which canons of the Western and Eastern Codes have been textually modified, in whole or in part, are cited and linked below as relevant. These documents are collected, and side-by-side comparisons are offered, at Peters wbp, Post-promulgation textual modifications to codified canon law, here.
